IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy is a powerful yet noninvasive way to improve sun damage, uneven tone, redness, and overall skin clarity. While the treatment itself is quick, what you do afterward plays a big role in how smoothly you heal and how great your results look. Here are the most important dos and don’ts after IPL.
At Picasso Medical Aesthetics, our team takes a highly personalized approach to advanced skin rejuvenation. Led by Dr. Sylvia Garcia and backed by over 20 years of experience serving LA County, the practice is known for personalized care, exceptional service, and a relaxed, comfortable environment.
The Dos After IPL
Do protect your skin from the sun religiously.
Your skin is more sensitive after IPL, and UV exposure can increase the risk of irritation or unwanted pigment. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily (even if it’s cloudy) and reapply if you’re outdoors. A wide-brim hat and sunglasses help too.
Do keep your routine gentle.
Stick to a mild cleanser and a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer for the first few days. If your provider recommends it, soothing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or ceramides can help support the skin barrier.
Do expect “coffee-ground” spots.
If IPL targets pigment, dark spots may temporarily deepen and look speckled before flaking off. This is normal. Let the skin shed naturally.
Do use cool compresses if needed.
A cool (not icy) compress can reduce heat or swelling. Keep it clean and limit contact time.
Do follow your provider’s instructions.
Aftercare can vary depending on your skin type and the treatment. If you’re unsure about a product, ask before applying.
The Don’ts After IPL
Don’t pick, scratch, or exfoliate.
Avoid scrubs, cleansing brushes, and chemical exfoliants until your skin is fully calm. Picking at flaking pigment can lead to irritation or discoloration.
Don’t use “active” skincare right away.
Pause retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and vitamin C for several days (or as directed). These can sting and slow recovery.
Don’t take hot showers or use saunas for 24-48 hours.
Heat can worsen redness and swelling. Keep showers lukewarm and temporarily skip intense workouts.
Don’t tan before or after.
Tanned skin can lead to potential side effects and reduce the effectiveness of IPL.
